How Much Money Can You Save By Shopping At The Commissary?

I need to start saving my money.
Is it much cheaper to shop for groceries at the commissary? The commissary is further from my house than the local superfresh. Would the expense in gas even be worth it?

It honestly depends on what you are looking at buying and what is available at your local stores. Especially if they have sales on or if you also have a dollar store. How close is the commissary is it below 30 minutes away?? if so then it can be beneficial. Things like produce & fruits are about the same. Even milk and eggs can be priced similar. But other things like canned veggies, salad dressings, cereal, cleaners, boxed goods, etc.. can be cheaper at the commissary. For example a Enchilada kit by Ortega at the commissary by us costs $2.80 at the closest grocery store, $4.50. It also helps if you do use the coupons available at the commissary for just there and the coupons from the paper. Also the local sales tax can make a difference at the commissary it is 5%

Depends on what you are shopping for. Overall the Commissary claims you can save up to 20%.
If you are a smart shopper and look for the best prices it can vary.
The Commissary sell at cost plus a 5% surcharge.
Many Grocery stores and WalMart will sell some items at a loss to get you in the door and expect you to buy other things.
Shop smart and you can save alot. Look for truckload sales at Commissary. buy in bulk if you can.
As a rule the smaller the package the more the unit cost.

There are some lower prices for certain items in the commissary. My wife and I by some items there, and other items in town…using discounts. You just have to know the prices around town.
Sometimes I wonder about their logic. Last week we did our shopping. Got to the dog food. A single can was 59¢, but by the 18 can case (same brand, same type), it worked out to 68¢ a can. We bought 24 cans at 59¢ loose. Go figure.
The larger is not always cheaper.
The surcharge is like a sales tax anyway.

I always saved at the commissary. The reason is this: They sell their products at cost. Whatever they paid for it, they sell at that price. At checkout, they tack on a 5% surcharge, but that is still less than the percentage of profit that a civilian store maintains.

    Depends on where you live.
The Fort Campbell Commissary is pretty good for meats( selection and price ) and some frozen tv dinners.
But the same for everything else.
Your best bet, is next time you go grocery shopping, keep the receipt and then go to the Commissary and compare prices.

When the hubs was in we never shopped at the commissary. We found it to be just as expensive or even more so than the regular stores.

20% or more, and that would depend how many miles away it is, and just how much food you buy at a time.
